Amazing Alaska Part 4

 We spent the last night of our Alaskan cruise in Victoria Canada, The weather was perfect, the sun was setting, it was the perfect ending to a vacation with my family that I will never forget!  When we got off the ship, we boarded a bus and headed into the beautiful city of Victoria.

I love the sight of decoratively lit buildings, so I couldn't resist getting a shot of this.

 

After sight seeing and shopping in Victoria, we boarded our ship for dinner an our last night together on the cruise.

Time Machine

For a couple of hours yesterday, my husband and I felt like we took a trip in a "time machine".

Right in the middle of this urban modern day city we live in is a 100 year old ballpark "League Park". Sadly, all that remains of this park is a small portion of it's red brick facade and the building that once housed the "ticket office".
Historical moments in baseball happened here. Babe Ruth hit his 500th homerun here, The Cleveland Indians won the 1920 world series here. The first grand slam in world series history was hit here. The first unassisted triple play in world series history happened here.

Players such as Babe Ruth, Tris Speaker, Joe Dimaggio, Cy Young, Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, "shoeless" Joe Jackson played here at this park! Both of us tried to imagine these baseball greats as we looked at the clubhouse steps leading onto the field. We really felt the history!

Seeing the park was not the only reason we were there. We were there to watch a baseball game, a very special game.ame that transported us back the year 1864.

The moment we stepped into the ballpark and looked out onto the field and saw two teams dressed in 1864 baseball uniforms, we both felt like we were in a "time machine". The uniforms were amazing. The players used 1864 terminology, everything was done with amazing detail.
The rules of 1864 baseball are also different than baseball rules today:

Summary of Rules Base ball is a gentleman’s game:

•There shall be no bunting, sliding, or running out of the base paths.
•Uncivil language, ungentlemanly behavior, spitting, alcohol consumption, chewing of tobacco, and wagering are not tolerated.
•The pitcher delivers the ball where the striker requests it.
•Balls and strikes are not called unless the umpire deems it necessary.
•The ball is delivered underhand in a shallow arc to allow good striking.
The fielders play the following position until the pitched ball has crossed home base:

•First, second and third basemen play near or on their respective bag.
•Shortstop may position himself anywhere on the field.
•Behind plays behind home base by not farther than forty-five feet.
•Left, mid, and right fielders play in the middle of their respective positions.
The striker is dead when:

•A batted ball is caught on the fly, fair or foul.
•A batted ball is caught on one bound off the ground, fair or foul.
•Three hurled balls are swung at and missed.
A baserunner is dead when:

•Forced at base or the ball is held at any base when he arrives.
•Tagged out.
•Runs three feet or more outside of the base path.
Other rules:

•Foul ticks are not considered strikes.
•A batted ball is determined by the umpire to be fair or foul by where it first hits the ground.
•A baserunner may advance at risk if a batted ball is caught on one bound.
•A baserunner may advance on a fair ball caught in the air after it is caught.
•A baserunner may lead off after the ball has left the hands of the pitcher.
•A baserunner may attempt to “steal” a base at his own risk, after the ball has left the hands of the pitcher.

Rain, Food & Friends

  Today was the day of the first "guy trip" of this year.  My husband and his buddies had been looking forward to this day for a month now!  My husband and three friends were going pile into our car and take a "roady" a few hours away to Pittsburgh to go to the Pirates vs L.A. Dodgers game!
  Everything was all set for this trip.  Everybody was going to meet at our house, I was going to get donuts and make coffee for the guys, I got my husband's baseball jersey, hat, glove out the night before.  I mean everything was ready.
  The trip was a total "go" until this morning.  Yes, we awoke to the sound of rain hitting our bedroom windows.  First thing we did was turn on the news to watch the weather report.  The forecast was nothing but rain and thunderstorms all throughout Ohio and most of Pennsylvania!  UGH!  Next thing you know, we received three seperate phone calls from the other guys saying they didn't want to go because of the rain. 
  My husband is one of the most die hard baseball fans I've ever met!  He was practically on his hands and knees begging, trying to convince each guy that "there's only supposed to be a little bit of rain" or "we can wear ponchos, we'll stay dry enough, really" etc...  I felt sorry for him.
  I then told my husband to call the guys and invite them over for lunch and baseball watching (we have the Major League Baseball package through our Satellite Dish company).
  Each guy accepted.  I made some homemade pizza and nachos, we had drinks etc...  A couple of guys brought their wives with them and we ended up having a great day of Baseball, Pizza & Friends!

Quiet moments

It's dark, except for the light of my computer screen. It's quiet, except for the sound out 2 snoring pugs. Snow is quietly falling outside, and my husband is fast asleep by my side. With pj's on and a cup of hot tea close by, I'm comfortably sitting up in bed typing away on my laptop.
I treasure quiet moments like these. This is my time to unwind from my day of working, household chores, caring for 2 dogs, cooking, making weekend plans with my husband for dinners with friends etc...
I'm thinking tomorrow might be a stay at home in my pj's day depending on the weather. I'm lucky enough to be able to work in my pj's (I'm certain my computer doesn't care what I wear!), so it is definitely a thought.
Quiet moments like these allow me to reflect on the day, relax, slow my mind down (it's been racing lately).
Now, all I need is one of my parents or grandparents here to sit by the bed and read me a bed time story, and all would be right with the world!
