Away From Reality

Even though things have been rough for us lately, and at times my husband and I have wanted to "strangle each other", my husband gave me the best surprise ever!
He surprised me with a 4 night cruise to the Bahamas, plus 3 nights at a fancy hotel in Miami FL, which added up to a wonderful  one week vacation/ one week away from reality!
We boarded our two dogs and flew down to Florida and started the most memorable trip ever!  It was just what we needed.   The two of us experiencing the beautiful Bahamas together, eating breakfast together out on the deck of a beautiful ship sailing in the Carribean sea, before we ventured off the ship each day.  Ending each day with a candlit dinner under a starry night sky.
Here are some pics from our "magical" week!  Enjoy!

Conveniences

The husband and I just returned from a nice long vacation in Texas.  I know, Texas of all places?  Well we always like to pick places we've never been before for vacation.  We've been to Texas before but not to the Houston area.  We stayed about 45 minutes outside of Houston.  We had a condo on the shore of Lake Conroe.  The lake was beautiful, and we had an awesome swimming pool right off the lake (each night we watched boats sail by while relaing in the pool under the bright stars in the Texas sky)!  It was very relaxing and the perfect opportunity for us to reconnect with each other.
The condo we stayed in was big but did not have any up to date conveniences.  I mean no DVD player, only basic cable (very basic, only got local programming which was fine to me), no stereo, no internet, which meant my husband lugged a laptop around two airports for nothing ( no internet didn't bother me either), no microwave (I only use ours for heating up water for tea anyway, so no big deal).  One inconvenience I could have definitely done without the first day was the "griping husband".  My husband just didn't know what he was going to do with being able to watch a DVD at night or watching ESPN, or without access to the internet so he could check on his fantasy baseball team!  He sounded like the world was conimg to an end!!  I kept telling him that "people lived for 100's of years without those things and survived just fine, so stop complaining!"  The only conveniences I cared about we had, and those were air conditioning and a washer and dryer in the condo, that's all I needed!  We had a 2 bedroom 2 1/2 bath air conditioned condo to ourselves for a little over a week!  Can't complain!
Hearing my husband caomplain, got me thinking.  I asked myself who would survive better without modern conveniences?  Me or him?  I definitely believe it would be me, after all my husband called me when I was in California visiting my dying grandmother because he didn't know how to make instant oatmeal for himself, or work the stove.  Ya, I think I would win!

It's Saturday!

I'm on the tail end of my little "vacation", as my husband is on his way home (I have a little over 2 hours left).  Last night a wrinkle was put in "girl's night out plans".  Instead of going out, the huge thunder & lightning storm we had dictated that we stay in!  So it ended up being a "have chinese food delivered, ice cream eating, put our feet up, watch chick flicks at my house" night!  Oh, not to be forgotten, the long hot bubble bath was taken this morning!  It was a fun and relaxing night!  My "girlfriends" and I lounged around on our couches after dinner and watched chick flicks in the dark while eating ice cream.  Perfect!
We had some big "booms" of thunder last night that literally shook the room!  The combination of the thunder & lightning show going on outside with watching movies in the dark was  awesome!  Everyone left around 12:30 a.m. or 1 a.m.  We got to cry a little and laugh a lot together!  We love our husbands, but it's nice to have time away from them also!

"Vacation"

Girls' Night Out Cocktail Party Deluxe Party Kit  As of this morning, I'm on a mini vacation!  No, not the kind of vacation where I had to pack and travel somewhere.  I'm on a mini vaction right here in my home!
My vacation started this morning with my husband leaving the house with suitcase in hand, and driving away.  My husband drove a couple of hours away to help his brother move furniture out of their mother's (she passed away last August) house before the sale on it is finalized.  I chose to stay home.  It's too much chaos to travel with and take care of 2 dogs while moving furniture out visiting family etc...
So at least until he returns, I am on a "put my feet up, relax, chinese food, cheesecake eating, wine drinking, chic flick watching, long bubble bath taking, night out with the girl's" vacation!

Things I Love/ My Favorite Things: Day 2 (Pug Love)

Today it's all about Pugs! Pugs! Pugs! Pugs! Pugs are my all time favorite dog breed.
It's really my parents' fault, because I caught the "Pug bug" from them!
About 10 1/2 years ago when I still lived in California, my mom and dad went on vacation to San Diego for a week. My mom and dad not only returned home with their luggage, they also had a extremely cute 8 week old Pug, they named Daisy! I took one look at Daisy's little wrinkled face and just fell in love! How could anybody resist! Pugs make my heart melt with their little wrinkled faces and pushed in noses, oh and their big brown eyes! I love the "snorting" sounds!
I moved to Ohio when Daisy was a year old. I moved in with my then boyfriend (who is now my husband). We lived in an apartment (no pets policy). The apartment seemed empty without a pug, I missed hearing "snorts" and hearing them over the phone wasn't enough!
My mom and dad started sending me pictures of Daisy and also Pug cards, they always put a big smile on my face!
The first order of business when we bought our first house was to get a dog! I wanted, you can guess it, a Pug! I didn't even want to look at other breeds. Don't get me wrong, I love all dogs, but I just wanted my own Pug.
We got our Pug Lacy a month after we moved in. She was 6 weeks old , and the cutest, tiniest thing you ever saw! OMG! We couldn't put her down, it was definitely "love at first sight" for my husband and I! Three years later, my husband got me another Pug as a Christmas present, he had me go on a scavenger hunt, and at the end was a little 6 week old pug puppy we named Lilly!
Our 2 Pugs together are unbelieveable! I love taking them to the dog park on sunny days, and watching them play together is "hilarious". We have true "Pug love" in our house.
I am posting a few pictures of our Pugs. Enjoy the "Pug love" today!

Another resolution: Continue "page turning"

One thing that was a common sight during my childhood was that of my mother reading a book. My mother was and still is a voracious reader. She would spend many weekend and vacation days lying in the California sun reading. At night while my dad, older brother and I watched T.V, you could find her curled up on couch reading. She is the only person I know of that actually brings a book to read when at a major league baseball game! My mom recently told me she normally finishes a book in a week. I don't read as much as I should (even though I do enjoy reading)I always seem to find an excuse for not reading such as "don't have time" etc... at my age, my mother was a married woman with 2 kids and a full time job outside the home. What I admire was that she either found or made time to do something that she loves! Well no more excuses for me! So here I go!

In a recent post I mentioned one resolution I made around New Years to become more disciplined. One of my other resolutions is to read more. Towards the end of 2009, I was going to get a jump start on this resolution. I friend of mine invited me to join her book club! I immediately accepted and read the book they were currently reading which was "The secret lives of Bees". The book club would meet at a different member's house once a month to discuss the current book, and a different member would then chose the next book and so on.... The club was a lot of fun, but around the holidays everyone got busy and the club "feel apart". I didn't read anything in January and February (shame on me). This week I started a book called "Carry me home" by Sandra Kring, I'm about 1/4 the way through it, very good story, I will not reveal any details until I'm done.
I thought it would be kind of fun to start my own little book club here. I will keep my blog updated as to which book I'm reading. When I'm done with the book I will discuss it in my post. If anyone wants to read along with me, "the more the merrier!"

Where I'm going/ Where I've been

Where am I going? I don't know. My husband and I are in the process of figuring out where we want to go on our next vacation. We always want to go somewhere new and explore what that destination has to offer. Anytime we talk about new places to go, I think about where I've been. I find myself looking through my photo albums, taking mini vacations down memory lane. I posted some of my favorite pictures here.

Vacation/Travel tips

It's summertime and I know lot of people out there are going to hit the road or take to the skies to start their vacations! I'm a former airline agent and I thought I would offer a few airline passenger travel tips from an "insider's point of view". These tips can help you get your trip off to a less "stressful" start.

Before you get to the airport, make sure you have a address tag on both the outside and inside of your luggage and your carry on bag. I always suggest an address tag on the inside just in case the one on the outside breaks off, this is helpful to the baggage service office to look your name up in their system should something happen to your luggage. Another thing I suggest is to make a note of a couple of specific items packed in check in luggage, for example: blue hair dryer, red shorts etc...This helps any baggage service office locate your lost bag faster, in case the flight bag tag or your address tag has been broken off.

Remember airlines are NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR HANDLES, WHEELS, ZIPPERS, TAGS being broken off bags.

Please DO NOT PACK VALUABLES, MEDICINES, MONEY, KEYS etc... in your checked luggage.

When you arrive at the check in counter, have your I.D. and reservation confirmation # in hand, this will make check in quicker for you and the airline agent checking you in. Also, have your check in luggage loaded onto the scale, this makes it much easier for the agent to tag your bags.

While you are in line at the security check point, have your boarding pass and I.D. in hand. Since they are scanning shoes, take off your shoes while you are waiting in line, this way you are ready to put your shoes through the scanner when you get to the check point. Another good thing to do is to have your carry on, any jacket you may have on in hand and ready to put through the scanner when you get to the check point. These simple tips will make going through security quicker for everyone!

When you are in the gate area, pay close attention to your departure time and to all gate announcements. Most airlines END BOARDING TIME ten minutes before departure, to help ensure an on time departure. Once the aircraft doors are closed, they cannot be reopened until the flight reaches it's destination. Airlines are not liable for anyone missing their flight if they are not in the gate area and missed announcements! They will rebook you on the next available flight but are NOT REQUIRED TO GIVE COMPENSATION for anyone missing their flight because they were not paying attention.

When boarding your flight, decide where you are going to stow your carry on ahead of time( either overhead or under the seat in front of you). Also, take off anything like backpacks, jackets before you board the flight and have them in hand so you can stow them quickly before you sit in your seat. Following these little tips will help keep the airplane aisle clearer and make boarding quicker.

If your flight is cancelled, please do not get angry with the airline agents, they are not responsible for your flight being cancelled! They are there to assist you! Be patient, airlines are not responsible for weather delays or cancellations THERE ARE NO AMMENITIES DUE TO WEATHER OR "ACTS OF GOD"! Airlines are not required to provide hotel accomodations or any kind of compensation unless you are delayed over 4 hours due to a mechanical problem or air traffic control delay!

I hope some of these tips are helpful, I will have some more in a later post. Bye for now, and happy travels!
